The son of Dr. Charles Drayton (1785-1844) and Mary Middleton Shoolbred (1794-1855), and grandson of Charles Drayton (1743-1820) of Drayton Hall, James Shoolbred Drayton was born on Jehosse Island (Charleston County, S.C.) in 1820 and married Louisa Eleanor Elford (d. 1851) in 1844.
