Drayton family papers, 1837-1869.

Papers consist of correspondence, writings, military records, accounts, plats, and other items. Included are the papers of James Shoolbred Drayton (1820-1867) and John Drayton (1831-1912). Papers include a letter (n.d.) about a "slight altercation between Col. Tarleton and my grandfather Dr. Charles Drayton" at Drayton Hall during the American Revolution; a letter (1863) to Thomas Henry Middleton Drayton in Texas concerning a shipment of cotton; a copy (n.d.) of a list of slaves given cloth and blankets at Drayton Hall; and tax receipts (1861-1862) for the property (including horses, slaves, and land) of Thomas Henry Middleton Drayton in Brazoria County (Texas). Writings (n.d.) consist of manuscripts of poems (many signed "Hall") and a fragment (5 p.) of a novel about a young man named Sidney Gist. Account book (1852-1856) of Mary Middleton Shoolbred Drayton contains her accounts with Legare & Colcock for sales of cotton and payments of household expenses, taxes, and other expenditures; entries for 1856 are her estate accounts. Plats (n.d.) of a farm are possibly school exercises of James Shoolbred Drayton; another plat of land (location not indicated) is contained in a letter fragment or draft (n.d.) of James S. Drayton.
